This document constitutes the illegal content risk assessment for UnityFreak, as required under section 9 of the Online Safety Act 2023. UnityFreak is operated by Nemesis Gaming.
The purpose of this assessment is to identify, assess, and document the risks of illegal content appearing on the platform, and to set out the measures we take to mitigate those risks. This assessment covers all user-to-user and search services provided by the platform.
UnityFreak is an online platform for software developers. The platform provides the following services:
The following table assesses the risk of each priority illegal content category appearing on the platform, taking into account the nature of our service, user base, and functionalities.
| Content Category | Risk Level | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Terrorism content | Low | UnityFreak is a technology education platform focused on software development. The user base consists primarily of developers and learners. The platform is not political in nature and does not host content types commonly associated with radicalisation. The risk of terrorism content appearing is low but not zero due to open user-generated content features. |
| Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) | Medium | The platform allows user-uploaded images (profile pictures, course content, forum attachments), direct messaging, and user profiles. Any platform with image uploads and private messaging carries an inherent risk of CSAM. While the platform purpose does not attract this content, the functionality exists for it to be shared. |
| Fraud and financial crime | Medium | The marketplace and freelance jobs features involve financial transactions between users. This creates a risk of fraudulent listings, payment scams, fake services, and financial exploitation. Users may also attempt to use forums or messaging for phishing or social engineering. |
| Hate speech | Low–Medium | Forum discussions, comments, and direct messages provide channels where hate speech could appear. The technology-focused nature of the platform reduces this risk compared to general social media, but any open discussion platform carries some risk. |
| Harassment and stalking | Medium | Direct messaging, comments, and user profiles create opportunities for targeted harassment and unwanted contact. The freelance and marketplace features may also lead to disputes that escalate into harassment. |
| Drugs and weapons | Low | The platform is focused on software development and does not have features that would facilitate the sale or promotion of controlled substances or weapons. The marketplace is restricted to digital assets. The risk is low but monitored. |
We implement the following measures to mitigate the risks identified above:
All user-uploaded images are scanned using AWS Rekognition for inappropriate or harmful content. Images flagged by the automated system are queued for human review before being published.
All uploaded images are checked against known CSAM hash databases. Any matches are immediately blocked, the content is removed, the user account is suspended, and a report is filed with the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).
Every piece of user-generated content (posts, comments, messages, listings, profiles) includes a report button. Reports are categorised by type and prioritised based on severity. Reports of illegal content are treated as high priority and reviewed within 24 hours.
Reported content enters a moderation queue reviewed by trained human moderators. Moderators can remove content, issue warnings, restrict accounts, or permanently ban users. All moderation actions are logged for accountability.
Forum posts, comments, and messages are analysed in real time using automated toxicity detection models. Content scoring above a threshold is flagged for review. Severely toxic content may be automatically hidden pending human review.
Direct messages are scanned for patterns that indicate attempts to share personal contact information (phone numbers, external social media handles) with minors, as a safeguard against grooming behaviour.
Users can block other users at any time. Blocked users cannot send messages, view profiles, or interact with the blocking user's content.
Rate limits are applied to messaging, posting, and account creation to prevent spam, automated abuse, and mass dissemination of harmful content.
Users who wish to sell on the marketplace or offer freelance services must complete identity verification. This reduces the risk of fraudulent listings and provides accountability for financial transactions.
This risk assessment is reviewed at least annually. Additional reviews are conducted when:
