This document constitutes the children's risk assessment for UnityFreak, which is operated by Nemesis Gaming, 61 Bridge Street, Kington, HR5 3DJ, United Kingdom, as required under section 11 of the Online Safety Act 2023. It assesses the risks that content and functionality on the platform may pose to children who use or may use the service.
UnityFreak is a software development education and community platform. While the platform is primarily designed for adult users, we recognise that users aged 16 and 17 may use the service and we have a duty to protect them.
The minimum age to create an account on UnityFreak is 16 years old. Users must provide their date of birth during registration, and accounts for users under 16 are not permitted.
For the purposes of this assessment, the relevant age group is children aged 16-17. These users may access all core platform features (courses, forums, messaging, community) but face restrictions on certain features as detailed in section 4.
The following risks have been identified for children aged 16-17 using the platform, organised by content type and functionality.
Risks: Grooming, unwanted contact from strangers, sharing of inappropriate content through private channels.
Mitigations: Users under 18 can only receive messages from accepted connections. This connections-only messaging default cannot be changed by the user. A person who is not an accepted connection of an under-18 account cannot be placed in a conversation with them, including group, project and task conversations. Direct messages are checked for attempts to share personal contact details, and a message that contains them is not delivered, the attempt is recorded on the sender's account, and repeated attempts may lead to a review of that account. Messages in conversations involving under-18 accounts are also checked by an automated filter for severely abusive language. Image attachments are checked as described in our Illegal Content Risk Assessment. These automated checks are limited, so we also rely on the connections-only default and on reports from users.
Risks: Exposure to inappropriate, harmful, or distressing content posted by other users in forums, comments, or course materials.
Mitigations: Images that users upload are checked automatically before they are made available, and much user-generated text is passed through automated filters for the most severe abusive language. A reporting system is available on most content, and you can always report by email to [email protected]. We review reports promptly and prioritise reports of illegal content. Community guidelines are enforced consistently and violations result in content removal and account sanctions.
Risks: Financial exploitation, exposure to scams, pressure to make purchases, unfair contract terms.
Mitigations: Users under 18 are not permitted to list assets or services on the marketplace, post jobs, hire for a project, enter contracts, apply for jobs or receive payouts. An 18+ age gate is enforced for these features. Sellers must complete identity verification before they can publish paid listings. Before a user under 18 can make any payment through the platform, a parent or guardian must confirm consent through an emailed link.
Risks: Privacy concerns, unwanted contact from strangers who discover profile information, potential for profiles to be used to target minors.
Mitigations: Profiles for users under 18 are private by default, and a private or connections-only profile is not listed in UnityFreak search results or indexed by external search engines. The user's age is never publicly displayed.
Risks: Harmful content amplification, filter bubbles, exposure to inappropriate content through automated suggestions.
Mitigations: Safety is a consideration in the recommendation algorithm for all users. Accounts under 18 are never suggested to other users as people to follow by our recommendation features. You can choose a chronological feed instead of algorithmic recommendations at any time: the Following tab of your feed shows posts from the people you follow, newest first.

Monitoring of the effectiveness of our mitigations is ongoing. We track moderation volumes, report rates, and response times for content involving minor accounts.

You can also use the same address to ask questions about this risk assessment or to make a complaint about how we have handled a report or applied our content rules. Complaints are reviewed by a person and we tell you the outcome.
